Dear Mr Anderson
Thank you for your enquiry regarding Dr Robert Anderson.
As promised during our earlier telephone conversation, I have now conducted a search on the Minutes of the Meetings of Council for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. However, I regret that (as I believe my predecessor Ms Pitman intimated to you during your previous correspondence) the search has not produced any further information of note.
I have checked several individual years' worth of Records. Firstly, our Licentiates listing from 1815-1871 lists several doctors by that name qualifying as Licentiates, although two were registered in 1864 and 1871 respectively, so were discounted as you mentioned in your earlier correspondence that Dr Anderson died in 1862. The diploma of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh was introduced in the 1770s, and was renamed Licentiateship in 1815.
However, I studied the Minutes for 1827, 1838 and 1840, all of which were down as a year in which a Robert Anderson qualified as a Licentiate, but no additional information on any was uncovered.
I also checked the Minutes of 1862 and early 1863 to see if the Council stood for silence on hearing of his death. However, this is traditionally only carried out for Fellows of the College and no record of it having been done for Dr Anderson is available.
As you are aware, the 1854 and 1856 Medical Directories are contradictory in their accounts for when Dr Anderson obtained Licentiateship from this College. The 1854 edition lists it as 1820, while the 1856 version has it as 1814. With this in mind I have checked the Minutes for both years, but I am afraid no record of the name is listed for either year. In 1820, for instance, there was a James, a Matthew and a Charles Anderson, but no Robert!
For your information, I have also consulted a Fellow of the College who is researching a book on some of the prominent Licentiates of the College from around that period, but I regret Dr Anderson is not one of them.
Of course, as you know, the Minutes are large handwritten, unindexed texts, so any search of them can never be entirely comprehensive. However, I believe the search has been as thorough as possible with the resources we have at our immediate disposal here. To this extent, I have also enclosed a list of further resources for historical researchers, which I hope may produce something of value to you.
In the meantime, may I take this opportunity to wish you the very best of luck with your future research.
Kind regards
Steve Kerr

Wife's Research NotesThere was an area of doubt regarding the name of Isabella's mother. Her father is certainly William, but on Isabella's death certificate, her mother is named as Isabella. The problem is that a William Dobie and a Mary Lindsay had several children in Colvend around the time Isabella was born there. William's occupation is given on the death certificate as 'shoemaker.' So, the death certificate of son Robert Dobie was examined. Again the father is William, and again the occupation is master shoemaker, and the mother is given as Mary Lindsay.
The liklihood of two William Dobie shoemakers, married to two different Lindsays, in the same village at the same time, is pretty remote, so I am confident that Isabella's mother was in fact Mary and that Isabella and Robert were brother and sister.
Another possible confirming factor is that William and Mary's youngest son was called David, as was Isabella's youngest son.

Colvend, Kirkcudbright, Scotland .53 1841 Census. Thomas Gibson was the son of Jane, born 1791, a widow who
lived at Carsethorn (house 11) in the 1841 census. He had
two sisters: Mary b 1816 and Margaret born 1821. Jane was
given as "independent" and Thomas was a labourer in 1841.
There was more than one Gibson family at Carsethorn. I shall
have to get out my lists of MIs and OPRs to guess who his
father might have been.
Also living at Carsethorn 11 was Robert Gillies, army, aged
25, born Scotland. He could be a very young brother of Jane;

31 Jul 1920 1914-15 Star Two medals.
" WWI Medals As to medals, there were no 'campaign' medals issued after the 1914 and 1914-15 Stars. So he will have been awarded: The British War Medal was issued to commemorate the successful conclusion of the war and awarded to those who had served in a theatre of war up to and including the official end of the war in 1920. All British and Imperial servicemen and women who served overseas between 1914 and 1920 were awarded this medal. The obverse shows King George V. The reverse of the circular medal shows St George on horseback trampling underfoot the eagle shield of the Central Powers and a skull and crossbones. The ribbon of the medal is orange watered centre with stripes of white and black on each side and borders of royal blue. Some 6,500,000 medals in silver and 110,000 in bronze were issued. The Victory Medal 1914-19 was issued in commemoration of the Allied victory, mostly to those who served on the establishment of a unit in a theatre of war between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918 (with some exceptions for later service). The obverse of the medal shows the standing figure of Victory holding a palm branch in her right hand. The reverse has a laurel wreath bearing the four-line inscription 'The Great War for Civilisation 1914 - 1919. The ribbon is a double rainbow with indigo at the edges and red at the centre. The same design of medal and ribbon was used by 13 allies. Some 6,000,000 of the British version are believed to have been produced.
.....article which I knew I had somewhere, which gives full details of all British medals issued to personnel who served in the armed forces between 1914 & 1920. This is titled "Pip, Squeak & Wilfred; Mutt & Jeff" by Iain Swinnerton, in the magazine "Practical Family History, No. 8, August 1998, pp. 5-6, pub. UK, ISSN 1367-1669, & there are pictures & full descriptions of all the medals. The one you have listed as Medal 1, is the Victory Medal, & is described as "Made of bronze, on the front it has a winged figure of victory and on the back the words "The great war for civilisation"... The ribbon was red, with green and violet on either side shaded to form two rainbows....The number, rank and name of the holder engraved around the rim..." The one you have listed as Medal 2, is the British War Medal (silver) . Extracts from the article as follows: "This was approved in 1919 to commemorate the end of the war.... The front of the medal ... has a portrait of the King with the inscription GEORIUS V: BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP. The other side depicts St George on his horse, under a sun of victory trampling underfoot the eagle device of the enemy (known collectively as the Central Powers) with a skull and crossbones to represent death... The ribbon is of orange silk with a blue edging and a black and white stripe down each side. The number, rank, and name of the recipients are engraved around the rim"
Those men who served in the British Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders between 5 Aug and 22 Nov 1914 received the 1914 Star (the "Old Contemptibles" medal). A Clasp to the 1914 Star, was allowed (together with the issue of an accompanying rose to be worn on the ribbon bar) if they had been under fire in the period 5 Aug 1914 to 22 Nov 1914. The men and women who served in any war zone between 5 Aug 1914 and 31 Dec 1915 were awarded the 1914-15 Star. All British and Imperial servicemen and women who served overseas between 1914 and 1920 were given the British War Medal. The ribbon of the British War Medal was apparently issued in 1919, before the actual medal, to allow it to be worn in Victory parades. Members of the British armed and uniformed services over the same period also received the Victory Medal. All these medals have the recipients' name, service number and regiment or corps stamped in small block capitals on their edge or, in the case of the 1914 and 1914/15 Stars, upon the reverse. Army officers' medals did not include the regiment or corps.
